Magento vs Shopify: A Practical Comparison for 2026

Magento vs Shopify: A Practical Comparison for 2026

Here is the short answer. Shopify is the right platform for the large majority of stores, because it is hosted, fast to launch, and cheap to maintain. Magento, now sold by Adobe as Adobe Commerce, is built for large or unusual operations that need to control everything and can afford a team to run it. If you have to ask which one you need, you almost certainly need Shopify. Magento is a deliberate choice made by companies that have hit a wall Shopify cannot move.

What each one actually is

Shopify is fully hosted software you rent by the month. Adobe runs nothing for you and Shopify runs everything for you: servers, security, updates, uptime. You manage products and marketing, not infrastructure.

Magento comes in two forms, and the distinction matters. Magento Open Source is free, self-hosted software you install and maintain yourself, much like WooCommerce but heavier. Adobe Commerce is the paid enterprise edition, licensed for a substantial annual fee and aimed at large merchants who need its advanced features and support. Both give you total control of the code. Both expect a capable technical team behind them.

Cost

The gap here is wide, and it is the fastest way to rule one out.

HostingIncludedYou provide it, and serious Magento hosting is not cheap
DevelopersOptionalEffectively required

Ongoing upkeepHandled for youYour team’s responsibility

Shopify’s cost is predictable and mostly a monthly fee. Magento’s cost is the platform, plus hosting, plus the developers who build and maintain it, and that last item is the real budget line. A Magento store is a staffed operation, not a subscription.

Scale and performance

This is Magento’s home ground. It is built to handle very large catalogs, complex pricing, multiple stores and brands under one roof, and the kind of custom business logic that enterprise retail runs on. Given a competent team and proper hosting, it scales to a size and complexity that would strain a hosted platform.

Shopify scales further than most people assume. Its higher tier, Shopify Plus, runs high-volume stores handling serious traffic and revenue without the merchant ever touching a server. The ceiling is high. What Shopify will not do is hand you unlimited control of the platform’s internals, and for a specific class of enterprise that control is the whole point.

Customization

Magento can be customized without limit, because you own the code. Every part of the catalog, checkout, and backend can be reshaped to an unusual business model. That power is exactly why it demands developers: nothing configures itself, and the platform is complex enough that casual changes cause real damage.

Shopify is customizable within its structure and fixed at its core. You can restyle the storefront freely and extend it with a large app ecosystem, but the checkout and the underlying platform stay Shopify’s. For the vast majority of stores that boundary is invisible. For an enterprise with genuinely unique requirements, it can be the reason to leave.

Who each one is really for

Shopify fits new and growing stores, teams without in-house developers, and even large merchants who would rather buy reliability than build it. It is the correct default from a first sale up through eight figures of revenue for most catalogs.

Magento fits large retailers with complex catalogs or multi-store operations, businesses whose model needs customization a hosted platform forbids, and companies that already have or will hire the technical team to run it. It is a platform you commit to, not one you try.

The honest decision

Most merchants asking this question are smaller than they think and would be better served by Shopify: live sooner, spend less, and avoid standing up a team just to keep the store online. The businesses that genuinely need Magento usually already know why, because they have run into a specific limit and can name it.

The one case that deserves real deliberation is a growing mid-market store trying to decide whether to invest in Magento now or scale on Shopify Plus for longer. That is a replatforming decision with lasting cost and lock-in on both sides, and it is worth modeling properly before committing. If your comparison is really between a hosted store and self-hosted WordPress rather than enterprise Magento, WooCommerce vs Shopify is the more relevant read.

Not sure which side of that line you are on? Our e-commerce development team has built on both and has no reason to oversell the heavier one. Tell us your catalog size, your team, and where you expect to be in three years, or call +1 (512) 861-8471, and we will tell you honestly whether Magento’s power is worth its overhead for you, or whether Shopify gets you there for a fraction of the cost.

FAQs

Is Magento better than Shopify?

Not in general, only for a specific kind of business. Magento gives more control and scales to greater complexity, but it costs far more and requires a technical team. For most stores that trade is a bad one, and Shopify’s hosted simplicity wins. Magento is better only when you need control Shopify will not give and can afford the team to use it.

Is Magento free?

Magento Open Source is free to download, but running it is not. You pay for hosting, developers, and maintenance, which together dwarf the price of the software. Adobe Commerce, the enterprise edition, adds a substantial annual license on top. Treat Magento as a staffed operation with real running costs, not as free software.

Can Shopify handle a large enterprise store?

In most cases, yes. Shopify Plus runs high-volume stores with large catalogs and heavy traffic while keeping infrastructure off your plate. The main reason to choose Magento over Shopify Plus at that scale is a need for deep platform control or highly custom logic that a hosted platform will not permit, not raw size alone.
